Harker School’s Nicholas Hall, Science and Technology Building located in San Jose, California reflects the next-generation of technologies and teaching methods. This design-build, ground-up, 50,000 sq. ft. concrete and steel science and technology building include 22 labs and classrooms, a 200-seat lecture hall, and a large forum space. All aspects of the building are designed for learning and are sustainable, encouraging scientific thinking and curiosity. Audiovisual systems allow worldwide sharing of science experiments from the lecture room. Sustainable features include a green roof, photovoltaic panels, infrastructure for a fuel cell, and eco-friendly materials and finishes. A student-led project to educate people on the buildings sustainable features helped secure the additional points to achieve LEED-NC Gold.
